Despite its comfortable ride, harsh bumps and rough surfaces are communicated to the cabin by shakes and rattles. The iM’s shocks are stiff enough to minimize body motions without sacrificing comfort, and its steering is relatively precise. The Corolla iM shares most of its underpinnings with the pedestrian Corolla sedan, but it benefits from an independent rear suspension (the sedan uses a less sophisticated setup) that helps provide a compliant ride and better handling. While it doesn’t shy away from spirited driving on two-lane roads, its engine needs to be thrashed to extract even modest acceleration, killing the fun before it barely gets started. Hot-hatch styling suggests the Corolla iM is quick and athletic. We’re not proponents of CVTs, but Toyota’s operates better than most of its rivals’. The iM is also available with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Now save your excitement because the iM’s underpowered four-cylinder engine will drain whatever reserves you might have left. Save the manuals! We love that the standard transmission on the Corolla iM is a six-speed shift-it-yourself unit. If it ain’t broke, why fix it? We can think of several reasons: lackluster acceleration, interior cheapness, and rear-seat tightness, all of which still plague the unchanged-for-2018 Corolla iM. Buyers content with its econobox performance will still enjoy the Corolla iM’s combination of cool and cheap. Apart from that, Toyota’s hip hatchback is a one-size-fits-all model with minimal options. These include an aero body kit, a 7.0-inch touchscreen, and active safety tech such as automated emergency braking. Bargain priced, its 137-hp four-cylinder is a snoozer, but what the iM lacks in power it makes up for with its list of standard features. Overall, most major controls are where you want them, but the interior quality and ambiance fails to make the grade as a true luxury sedan.The Corolla iM will catch the eye with its snazzy hatch style, and its affordable price will create a smile. Standard features on the ILX include dual-zone climate control, faux leather seating, push-button start, power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, moonroof, and a rearview camera. Cargo space measures in at around 12 cubic feet, and the folding rear seat back helps expand trunk volume when hauling bulky objects. It’s fine back there for short trips, but long drives with four adults onboard could lead to frayed nerves (and sore legs). The interior of the ILX is fine for those seated up front, though space is at a premium for anyone in the second row. At least the ILX is nimble and light on its toes. It feels underpowered compared to many luxury rivals, such as the Audi A3 and Lexus IS. Performance is adequate for everyday driving, though the engine lacks any real edge to it. The Acura ILX has one choice of engine, a 201-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder that sends power to the front wheels courtesy of a dual-clutch eight-speed automatic transmission. This included dropping the previous base 150-hp four-cylinder and the introduction of the optional AcuraWatch suite of safety features. This first-generation ILX was introduced in 2013, and between then and now, the 2016 model year brought the most significant changes. The 2018 Acura ILX is pretty much a complete carryover from the previous model year. Yet the same can be said for the Civic, and it costs thousands less. To its credit, the ILX has excellent fuel economy, and its size makes it a great fit for zipping through city traffic or squeezing into snug parking spots. Yet, beneath the sheet metal the ILX is little more than a gussied-up version of the popular Honda Civic. The 2018 Acura ILX has a premium badge and low starting price for a small luxury sedan. ![]()
